Canada announces a two-year cut to international student visas

Canada’s Minister Immigration Minister Mark Miller made the statement on Monday, the reason being the number of international students overpaying for their education from private institutions.

“It will be a disservice to welcome international students to Canada when knowing not all of them are getting the resources they need to succeed in Canada and return home to disappointment in Canada’s Education System.”

Miller says that for the next two years, Canada will be reducing the number of three year student visas by 35% from 2023, accepting approximately 360,000 international students.

Starting this September, international students accepting visas will no longer be eligible for work permits in Canada following graduation. This also affects spouses of students, who will only be offered open work permits if their partner is studying in a masters or doctoral program.

This announcement comes after a year of Canada accepting a record high number of international students, with the country accepting over 800,000 students in 2022 and Miller estimating the number to triple what they were a decade ago.

Out of a student population of about 13,000 students at SAIT, a little more than 4,000 were international in the 2022/2023 school year.

In a statement, SAIT said it values its rich culture and doubts this will impact thenumber of students coming from overseas to study at the institution. “We are confident SAIT will continue to have a strong international student presence reflecting the abundant diversity and culture found in our city and province.”
