Former Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi has announced he’ll be running for leader of the Alberta NDP. The highly anticipated announcement was made Monday, and Calgarians were quick to back up their former mayor.
“I think its great,” said SAIT student Zane Bauer, “he’s already got a lot of experience with local politics so to see him branching out to provincial, he’s already got a great history.”
Another student backed this up, observing that having a person of colour as Alberta’s premiere would be good for the province.
“I think its fantastic. I think Notely did a horrible job in this province,” stated Dion Nassef, “I look forward to seeing what Nenshi will be able to do, especially during now as its a really contentious time and its really nice to see some representation in a province where people tend to have conservative opinions when it comes to racial province.”
Nenshi’s campaign slogan is ‘For All Of Us’, which is not far off from when as mayor he advocated for uniting people of all political beliefs. His signature purple, a combination of liberal blue and conservative red, appears in his campaign video however now it’s accompanied by NDP orange.
Nenshi was Calgary’s mayor for three terms for a total of eleven years and joins five other candidates for Alberta’s newest NDP leader.
The Alberta NDP party will announce the new leader on June 22.
