A Calgary man who volunteered to help families immigrating to Canada has been charged with multiple counts of sexual assault.
Investigators say an adult reported multiple sexual assaults to police on October 12. The incidents are alleged to have taken place between December 2023 and June 2024.
Police say 83-year-old Robert Choquette had been assigned to a newcomer family through a local organization, and allegedly sexually assaulted the victim on three separate occasions.
“It is believed he leveraged his position as a volunteer sponsor and took advantage of the immigration status of the victim to commit the offences,” police said in a news release on Wednesday.
Choquette has been charged with three counts of sexual assault. He is scheduled to appear in court on November 27.
Anyone who believes they have been a victim of sexual assault is encouraged to contact police, regardless of when the incident happen. There is no statute of limitations on sexual offences in Canada.
