The Calgary Police Service and other partner agencies are raising awareness among Albertans to mark Family Violence Prevention Month. The November awareness month focuses on meaningful conversations about domestic violence with the hope of reaching out to those in need to access available resources.
The incidents of domestic violence increased in 2023, and domestic conflict reports received by the CPS continued to rise and remained consistent over the past many years. According to the statistics from 2020 to (Jan. to Sept) 2024, the reported domestic violence occurrences for 2023 was 4,070.
Staff Sergeant Glenn Andruschuk from the Calgary Police Service Domestic Conflict Unit said that in 2023, they responded to more than 23,000 calls for service related to domestic conflict.
Reported domestic violence occurrences pie chart:
2020 4,000
2021 3,718
2022 3,642
2023 4,070
2024 (Jan. to Sept.) 3,040
Reported domestic conflict calls for service pie chart:
2020 15,829
2021 15,729
2022 18,737
2023 19,322

Domestic violence is a complex problem that can only be addressed when everyone in the community works together to end it. Calgarians are encouraged to take time this month to learn how they can reach out and support someone they know, or suspect might be in an abusive or violent relationship.
There are many agencies ready to offer support that can be contacted by calling 211 including the Government of Alberta’s Family Violence Info Line at 310-1818 which is available 24/7 and in more than 170 languages from anywhere in Alberta.
