Former Alberta Premier Rachel Notley announced she is stepping down from her seat in the Alberta legislature, effective December 30. Notley, who has served as the MLA for Edmonton-Strathcona for nearly 17 years, shared the news in a statement on social media, saying she was stepping down with “mixed feelings.”

Notley led the Alberta NDP to victory in 2015, ending 80 years of conservative rule. However, after two election defeats, she stepped down as party leader earlier this year, paving the way for Naheed Nenshi to take over. In her statement, Notley praised Nenshi, saying his leadership offers great potential for Alberta, especially in addressing issues like affordability and healthcare.

Though she did not mention her future plans, she expressed gratitude to her family and staff for their support throughout her career.

Notley’s time as NDP leader faced challenges, including a recession and unpopular policies like the carbon tax. Despite winning in 2015, her popularity faded, leading to defeats by the United Conservative Party in 2019 and 2023. Nevertheless, Notley’s leadership remains a significant part of Alberta’s political history.
