Calgary Construction Season

Calgary, AB, Canada / RTBN

Road construction is very important for improving how people get around, but it often comes with downsides.

Right now, a big part of Calgary’s roads is closed for construction, making it hard for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians to move through the area. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time the community has dealt with these kinds of challenges.

Local businesses, like shops and restaurants, are having a rough time because fewer people are visiting. In past construction projects, they already dealt with slower sales, and now it’s happening again.

“I’ve noticed traffic is a lot worse,” Quinn Benson from the Rock Shop. “We lose a lot of sales during road closures.”

The closure of 10th Street and another closure on Fourth Avenue have made things even harder. Plus, a driveway has been temporarily relocated, which just adds more confusion.

“This closure is pretty huge,” Jennifer Burn from Urban Cellars added. “Sales haven’t been great lately.”

It’s not just stores feeling the pressure—customers are dealing with problems too. Detours and roadblocks make it harder to reach their frequent spots, and some are rethinking how and when they shop.

The Kensington area, known for its strong community vibe, is trying to keep locals shopping despite the hassles.

“It’s pretty quiet on weekdays, but parking could be an issue,” a shopper Daniel mentioned.

People living nearby seem to be handling the situation better.

“I’m from Bridgeland, and we just finished our road construction. I can walk to Kensington, so it doesn’t affect me much unless I leave the neighborhood,” shopper, Daphane explained.

With construction still ongoing, businesses are preparing for slower days, But for now, local stores and customers are hoping the construction wraps up quickly so everything can go back to normal.
