Alberta limits photo radar, Calgary seeks exceptions

Backed Up Traffic

Alberta’s new photo radar regulations have officially taken effect, reducing its use across the province.

The changes limit photo radar to school zones, playgrounds, and construction zones, and prohibit its use on provincial highways.

Additionally, the “speed on green” feature for intersection cameras is now restricted to red-light enforcement.

The new rules cut the number of eligible photo radar sites by approximately 70 per cent, from 2,200 to 650.

However, photo radar will still be permitted at intersections with higher-than-average collision rates, including areas with five or more injury or fatal collisions, or 15 or more property damage, injury, or fatal collisions over a three-year period.

While photo radar will still be allowed in high-collision areas, Calgary’s police service is preparing to apply for exceptions at certain intersections.

The Calgary Police Service said the new regulations have contributed to a $28-million shortfall in its budget moving forward.

City council voted to use reserve funds to cover the gap for 2025, but Mayor Gondek stated that discussions are ongoing to address the shortfall in the years ahead.
