Calgary Police to Add Photo Enforcement in Specific Zones on April 1st

April 1st marks the removal of photo radars on all major roads and highways. This comes after the province labeled radars as cash cows, acting as a revenue generator instead of acting as a safety tool for drivers. Calgary Police is now only allowed to place photo radar cars in school zones, park zones, and construction zones.

On the same day, Calgary Police announced they will add photo enforcement in these specific zones in 17 different communities across the city for the month of April. They will be focusing on Albert Park/Radisson Heights, Bridlewood, Capitol Hill, Collingwood, Dover, Forest Lawn, Highland Park, Hillhurst, Marlborough, Panorama, Rundle, Skyview Ranch, Sunalta, Taradale, Temple, Varsity, and Whitehorn.

Sunalta residents have mixed feelings about the enforcement announcement. One resident told SAIT Newsfile he thinks the police are adding more radars to compensate for the loss from the major road and highway ban. Another resident says it is important to prioritize pedestrian safety in a city focused on driving.

The change not only bans photo radar in police cars, but also Intersection Safety Cameras from ticketing for speeding. These intersection cameras won’t be removed and will still be allowed to monitor for red light infractions.
