Winter is Not Quite Over Yet. Reactions On Winter Tires.

A new round of snowfall began overnight in Calgary on Tuesday, resulting in winter driving conditions and temperatures below 0 degrees to settle in. However many hope this is the last of the snowfall squall the city will see.

  • Injury collisions: 8
  • Non-injury: 43
  • Injury hit-and-run: 1
  • Non-injury hit-and-run: 4
  • Total: 56

Calgary Police in a written a statement say a total of 56 crashes took place on city roads from midnight Tuesday into 8am Wednesday morning.

“…the City of Calgary does encourage motorists to winterize their vehicle, and that can include winter tires”

“So obviously the City of Calgary does encourage motorists to winterize their vehicle and that can include winter tires. You know in terms of when we recommend winter tires be put on, it’s obviously when you have those temperatures, you know below 0 consistently right now”, this advice from Chris McGeachy, communication strategist for City of Calgary roads and mobility department.

Many drivers are unsure on when to keep winter tires on until as the temperatures in Calgary are usually one predictable. The best course of action is to wait until mid-to-late April.

“I will probably keep [them] on for a while, I’m driving every day from Canmore to SAIT” according to Shaun James.

“I usually change them around mid-April” per Chris Macinnis another driver who urges motorists to be careful and don’t drive as the probability of getting into a crash or being stuck is higher.

“I think you need to be very experienced driving in the winter to run all season”

“For the average person and the average driver in Calgary, yes I would recommend to run winters over all seasons. I think you need to be very experienced driving in the winter to run all seasons” explains Kody Wickham who airs the caution of using all season tires.

Both Calgary Police and City of Calgary reminds motorists to pack extra patience and travel safely during winter road conditions.
