Parks Canada confirmed that grizzly bear 122, known as The Boss, was spotted in Lower Bow Valley on April 7.
Area closures may be implemented in the park as needed during times of increased wildlife activity.
Parks Canada encourages visitors to be alert and respect wildlife while in the national park.
To stay safe while in bear country, Parks Canada provided the following tips:
- Make lots of noise to let bears know you’re in the area, including calling out, clapping, singing or talking loudly;
- Always carry bear spray and keep it accessible and know how to use it;
- Watch for bear signs, like tracks, diggings, droppings, torn-up logs and turned-over rocks;
- Keep dogs on a leash;
- Hike in groups of four or more;
- Stay on officially marked trails and only travel during daylight; and
- If you see a large dead animal, leave the area and report it to park staff.
Park visitors are encouraged to report bear and other large carnivore sightings to Banff dispatch at 403-762-1470.
