A poll that was recently conducted by the Angus Reid Institute, suggests that 1 in 4 Albertans would vote to separate from Canada, if a referendum vote was held.

The question that was presented in the poll of 2,400 people read “Suppose there was a referendum tomorrow in your province about voting to leave the country and form its own independent country. Would you vote yes or no?” The results of this question was 25 percent of Albertans saying yes.

Dan Toews, a local pedestrian shares his thoughts about the question in the poll. “I think we should look into it a little more, it would be hard to leave Canada but I’ve felt quite a few of the last few years, that we haven’t been treated very fairly in Alberta.”

Others don’t support the movement and want Alberta to stay apart of Canada. DJ Giacobbo, a Calgarian says “No, I don’t think we should separate from Canada, I’m a proud Canadian and I’d like to keep it that way”.

As Canada is currently at odds with the United States, Calgarian, Siobhan Chinnery says “I think Canada’s uniting now, I think in my personal opinion, the one good thing Donald Trump is doing for Canada is uniting us as Canadians.”

Another big factor of Albertan’s opinions is the upcoming federal election in Canada. A local Calgarian, Joyce Smith gives her thoughts on how the elections potential impact. “It sounds like people have got their minds pretty well made up already, so we won’t know until someone’s elected what will happen.

Calgarians seem to be split on the matter and with the upcoming federal election, it seems likely that the topic will become even more controversial.
