Alberta tops Canada in tourism growth

Alberta is internationally recognized as a premier tourism destination — from the Rocky Mountains to the prairies, and from small towns to vibrant cities, many visitors are drawn to the province’s natural beauty and urban experiences.

Since creating the Ministry of Tourism and Sport, the Alberta government has been investing in its own success — and it’s paying off.

In 2023, Alberta broke records, with annual visitor spending reaching $12.7 billion — nearly 20 per cent higher than the previous record. The province also saw record international visitor expenditures.

Data from the first three quarters of 2024 shows Alberta’s tourism sector continues to boom. From January to September, tourism revenues grew 10 per cent year over year, suggesting the province is on track to set another annual spending record. Alberta is also outpacing every other province in tourism growth, advancing at a rate more than double that of Ontario and British Columbia, and more than triple the national average.

Alberta’s long-term tourism strategy outlines a goal to grow the province’s visitor economy from $10 billion in annual spending to $25 billion by 2035.
