Stu Peppard arena has been the home of the Calgary Royals and many memories since 1962. However, the 63 year old rink has had some maintenance trouble in the last couple years and it’s been fading for sometime now. In 2021 city council discussed building new twin arenas in the Glenmore athletic park to take over the aging arena. On Wednesday, the city had a groundbreaking event to celebrate the new arenas. Mayor, Jyoti Gondek was there among other guests from the city and Hockey Calgary to give speeches and participate in the event. One of the guests was Heather Johnson who is the Director of Recreation and Social Programs for the city. She said that the new arena will double the spectator capacity of Stu Peppard, make ice bookings easier, and it’ll even include solar panels on the top of the building to help power it with clean energy. She went on to say that there will also be a new track area and other amenities to support that in the future. In attendance as well was the president of the Calgary Royals Athletic Association, Juanita Renwick. I asked her what this arena would do for the royals and she had only good things to say. She mentioned that booking ice for all the teams will be easier and the maintenance will be better with regards to keeping the ice cool and dressing room size and quantity. All though Stu Peppard has seen it’s fair share of championship teams and life time memories, everyone is looking forward to the new rink and all the culture that will be built there. The rink is expected to be finished in 2027 in time for the fall and usage for the 2027-2028 season.
