Calgary’s New $900M Event Centre Is Taking Shape
Big changes are coming to Calgary’s downtown.
Construction on the city’s new $900-million event centre is picking up speed, with major progress expected throughout the year. By the end of summer, the project is expected to reach ground level, marking a key milestone. This project isn’t just about a new arena—it’s about transforming the area around it.As part of the event centre deal, the Calgary Stampede is receiving nearly $90 million in land transactions.
That includes:
-
A $23 million land sale
-
A $66.9 million land swap, giving the City land for Scotia Place
-
The Stampede receives Weadickville and the Saddledome site (once the building is removed)
The Stampede plans to build hotels next to the BMO Centre, helping attract more tourism and convention traffic. It’s part of a larger trend—sports venues acting as anchors for bigger city development.
Having hotels near Scotia Place and the BMO Centre means Calgary will be ready to host everything from concerts and Flames games to major events like the Global Energy Show, which brings 30,000+ visitors each year.
This project is more than a new arena—it’s the start of a new chapter for Calgary’s future.
