The Senator Patrick Burns building houses the Schools of Business, Health, and Advanced Digital Technology for the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology.
At approximately 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 23rd, a warning alarm sounded. At first, the pre-recorded voice advised staff and students to stay where they were and to be prepared to promptly exit the building if the emergency alarm were to sound.
After roughly ten minutes of the repeating warning alarm, an emergency siren started throughout the building. Hundreds of students and faculty gathered at safe distances from the building in the zero-degree weather, whilst three firetrucks arrived on the scene to investigate the cause of the alarm. “It’s probably a faulty alarm or something…” one student said.
After a thorough search of the building, the Calgary Fire Department deemed the building safe and everyone was cleared to re-enter.
At this time, It is unclear what exactly caused the alarm to go off, but a faulty alarm appears to be the likely culprit.
