SAIT’s redevelopment project leaves some students dissatisfied

Calgary, AB, Canada / RTBN

Last fall SAIT unveiled a new plan to redevelop its campus center which included demolishing its old building and starting construction on a new one. Construction for the building started in the spring of 2023 and is still ongoing.

The redevelopment is a multi-year project set to be completed in 2025. On Monday SAIT released an update on the construction to their website releasing new renderings of what the outside of the center is going to look like.

The new student center is expected to have a wellness center, facilities for all the Trojans teams, event spaces, a campus pub, and much more.

Students who are currently attending SAIT while the redevelopment is in the works say the plans are upsetting as they don’t have a facility where they can engage with other students like alumni did.

It’s really upsetting especially since you know you come to school to learn and be educated but if you turn your eyes to the social aspect and there’s no place on campus for us to really do that anymore.

Students expressed that not having a center where students can engage with each other is hard as former students had access to spaces where they could do that. Students also conveyed their displeasure with the old student center closing.
It’s really upsetting when I first started at SAIT it was still there. The building was still there and I was like super pumped of the idea that i’d get to use it and then they closed it like a month after I started. So it sucks.
