Wood's Homes Unveils New Youth Mental Health Centre in Calgary

A newly built state-of-the-art mental health home for at-risk kids has been unveiled to provide support, clinical services, and rehabilitation to children and young people.

The facility was built and fully furnished by Wood’s Homes, a multi-service, children’s mental health organization based in Calgary. The first of five therapeutic buildings that will provide 21st-century care to the clients and families. The centre will officially begin operations in early February.

Searle Turton, Alberta’s Minister for Children and Family Services highlighted the newest expansion for the Wood’s Complex is going to create a safe place for some of the most complex and vulnerable children throughout the entire province.

The centre is located on land belonging to the First Nation. Chief Lee Crowchild, a consultant for the First Nations, shared that while they had recently been offered $42.8 billion in a settlement from the federal government for children and families, it was not sufficient to meet the community’s needs.

The executive director for Wood’s Homes, Bjorn Johansson, said purpose-built, live-in treatment is a program for children and young people who are struggling with their mental health.

The services will be offered including behavioral support, clinical services, education, family support, recreation, health services, and opportunities for cultural connection.
