Gas prices drop in Calgary as consumer carbon tax is removed

It was a welcome sight for many Calgarians waking up Tuesday morning as gas prices dropped as low as 131.4 cents per litre and even lower at other stations around the city.

The changes are due to the removal of the nearly 18-cent-per-litre federal consumer carbon tax, which kicked in at midnight on April 1.

Monday saw gas prices in Calgary hovering around 158.9 cents per litre. Prices at some stations Tuesday were as low as 131.4 cents per litre, while others hovered around 143 cents per litre.

Prices at the gas pump were felt nearly immediately on Tuesday, but some heating costs are expected to come down eventually, too. The pause of the consumer carbon tax means a savings of about $4 per gigajoule on natural gas.

“A typical Alberta household uses between 3 gigajoules of natural gas in the summer and up to around 23 gigajoules per month in the winter. So, for example, if you used 10 gigajoules of gas, your federal carbon tax charge would have been 40 bucks,” said Matthew John, a senior communications strategist at Enmax.

While the carbon tax may be gone from fuel prices, Canadians are still set to receive the final Canada carbon rebate.

The last cheque will be issued on April 22 for those who filed their 2024 tax returns before Wednesday.

For anyone filing after that date, the rebate will be sent once their returns have been assessed.
