The Calgary Flames have recalled their first-round draft pick, Zayne Parekh, from the OHL. Parekh has reportedly joined the team in Anaheim.
The Flames selected Parekh ninth overall in the 2024 NHL Draft after the defenseman posted an impressive season with the Saginaw Spirit, scoring 96 points, which included 33 goals, in 66 games.
Parekh joined the Flames for the pre-season before being returned to the OHL. He went on to have a record-setting year with the Spirit, amassing 107 points. He became the first defenseman in 14 years to score 100 points in the OHL and the ninth overall to do so.
The Spirit were eliminated from the OHL playoffs in five games by the Erie Otters, with Parekh recording two goals and seven assists for nine points.
The call-up comes at a crucial time for the Flames, who are pushing for a playoff spot with five games remaining. Calgary sits four points behind the Minnesota Wild, who hold the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference.
The Flames earned a critical 3-2 comeback win over the San Jose Sharks on Monday and will face the Ducks on Wednesday in Anaheim.
It is unclear if the 19-year-old from Nobleton, Ont., will play Wednesday, but he is expected to make an impact when he makes his NHL debut.
