Alberta has confirmed six more cases of measles.

The province’s total confirmed cases since the beginning of March is now 83.

According to provincial data, four of the new cases are in central Alberta and two are in southern Alberta. The majority of confirmed measles cases involve children between five and 17 years old, and at least eight people have been hospitalized.

Dr. Mark Joffe, Alberta’s former chief medical officer of health, said while most cases are likely past the point of being contagious, that doesn’t necessarily reflect risk to the community.

Measles symptoms include:

  • Fever,
  • Cough
  • Runny nose,
  • Red eyes
  • Blotchy, red rash that appears three to seven days after fever starts.
