Calgarians Share Views Ahead of Federal Election

Old and new City Halls, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, North America

With the federal election on the horizon, many Calgarians appear eager to head to the polls. As the national conversation intensifies, many voters are zeroing in on issues that hit close to home.

In conversations across Calgary, residents voiced a range of priorities, but two issues stood out: the economy and the affordability crisis.

One Calgarian strongly desired to see candidates prioritize economic growth by supporting Alberta’s energy sector. “I want someone who’s going to put the economy first and allow for the oil and gas industry to sort of run rampant and do whatever they want,” they said. “That would be what’s best for us right now. So I’m kind of a one-issue voter, really.”

Whether driven by economic interests or broader concerns about the cost of living, voters seem more aware than ever of the stakes in this election. “I am planning on voting because, I don’t know, I think it’s a pretty important aspect of just being a citizen,”

Affordability is the driving force behind their decision at the ballot box. “I think the biggest thing I’m looking for is someone who’s willing to address the current unaffordability of Canada’s market. I mean housing, just prices of goods,” they noted.

After speaking with several residents,  many in Calgary see this as one of the most important elections in recent memory.
